BOUNCE TEST : Connecting team members: The impact of multi-channel internal communications

Continuing BOUNCE’s celebration of five years helping brands elevate their marketing, we talked with our Managing Partner, George Rosales. He shared stories about how he joined his wife Ada in running BOUNCE, how they work together, and how he supports the wonderful clients who trust us with their messaging, branding, and strategic needs.

What inspired you to join your wife in running BOUNCE?

I joined Ada at BOUNCE about six months in, when it was just getting started. I saw how much she was enjoying the entrepreneurial lifestyle, and that she was super busy handling the early success. My joining BOUNCE was always in the plan, but we didn’t think it would happen for a few years. A trusted partner of mine challenged me to accelerate the timeline, so I quit my job and joined Ada on this adventure about two and a half years earlier than expected.

What were those early days like, and what skills did you bring to the table?

Everything was new and uncharted. Small victories came easily, and every new client was exhilarating. I like to think I added value in those early days by helping establish and document our agency processes, define our core values, and find our purpose—which is to help good people do good things for the world.

How do you balance your professional and personal relationship with Ada to ensure they both flourish?

Working with your spouse isn’t for everyone, but it works for us and here’s why: We’re great friends, we laugh a lot and don’t take things too seriously, and we bring completely different skill sets and ways of thinking to the table. For us, that’s been the right mix for the last five years. And every now and then, a nice scotch helps.

How do you create compelling and effective solutions for your clients?

Listen first, ask open-ended questions, and think before making recommendations or suggestions. We’re in the solutions business, and you can’t solve a creative or a strategic problem unless you really know what it is. Our clients appreciate the fact that we take the time to really hear them and understand their needs.

How has BOUNCE’s approach to business development and client acquisition changed since you first started?

Business development is a mix of persistence, insistence, and consistency. As our lead salesperson, I expect a lot of people to say no at first. But I don’t take no for an answer because I believe so strongly in our team, our expertise, and our servant-leadership approach to solving client problems. The fact that we consistently do strong work and have great relationships with our clients makes my job a lot easier, because that’s really what attracts more business to us.

What’s contributed to BOUNCE’s growth and success over the past five years?

Taking action, being of service, holding ourselves accountable, and showing up every day has proven to be a winning formula for us. This isn’t rocket science, we just have to keep “pushing the rock forward.” Our secret weapon is the group of people who support BOUNCE as team members and referral sources. We wouldn’t be where we are now without them!

What are your goals for the agency's growth and development in the next five years?

To enjoy the company I keep and deliver great results for our clients. This life is short, so why not find ways to do great work in support of products and services that bring joy into this world?

How do you ensure that BOUNCE continues to deliver excellence as it expands?

It’s incredibly important to have documented processes in place and open lines of communication. We believe in full transparency at BOUNCE, and we work hard to explain what we’re doing during every project phase, as well as what’s coming next. Our honest, open approach is completely scalable.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start or grow a boutique branding agency—or any business for that matter?

I’d say a few things:
  1. Stay positive. Running your own business isn’t easy, so your attitude will carry you when things get hard and when they’re going great.
  2. Keep your focus. What are you trying to achieve? What value can you add to your clients and partners? Goals are incredibly important since they give you something to aim for and achieve.
  3. Find your crew. The people you surround yourself with absolutely impact your outcomes. I want to be around people who like to have fun and laugh, but I also want to be around skilled, smart people who work hard and communicate well.
  4. Be patient. Nothing in this life that matters happens quickly. Running an agency is like tending a garden.
  5. Ask for help. I’m humble and self-aware enough to know that I don’t have all the answers. Reach out to people you respect and admire for advice when you need it.
  6. Spend time building your pipeline. You can have the best agency in the world, but if no one knows about it does it matter? No leads, no sales = no bueno for business.
